What is Rathbone?

As a child, my parents had a lot of silly and embarrassing nick names for me. One of them was Razzle Frazzle Rathbone... yeah, I know... anyway, contrary to my constant objections, I actually kind of liked it. So when I decided I wanted a name for my design, photography and other creative ventures, I decided on Rathbone Studio. My regular name is Jasmin Cairns.

I have a background in Visual arts and Photography. I have always been drawn to design, architecture and interiors. I am fascinated with how a space can affect its occupants, how experience can be manipulated through spatial planning, materiality and light, how a space can have an influence on a person’s well being and state of mind.

Before entering the realm of Interior Design I worked as a photographer. I have studied a Diploma of Visual Arts at Swinburne University, Bachelor of Visual Arts, Photography major, at the Victorian College of the Arts, and now the Diploma of Interior Design & Decoration at RMIT. I love to learn.

I live and work in Melbourne, Australia. I am passionate about ethical & sustainable design and making thoughtful and interesting design accessible to people from all walks of life.

When I'm not sketching up plans, taking photos or glued to my computer you'll find me on the hunt for a good coffee or a bar with the right blend of good music and cheap wine. If you can recommend any, drop me a line.
